Red Lion Folk Club

Wednesday November 28th

Karen Pfeiffer & Paul Walker / Jake Wilson

This Anglo-German duo are already firm favourites at the club, combining  their original material with a fine choice of folk favourites. Based in Staffordshire, Karen came originally from Stuttgart in Germany and was ‘discovered’ by Paul busking in a city centre park. He invited her to perform in England and they have been playing music together since 2012. Their CDs ‘One by One’ (2013) and ‘Marble Town’ have received glowing reviews in folk and music industry magazines; they are now recording their third full album.

Jake is a folk-rock guitarist and songwriter in the Richard Thompson mould although he trained as a classical violinist and piano player and went to India to study the sitar. Subsequently he was to focus his attention upon the guitar. He played with Dave Swarbrick as a duo over the last years who described him as ‘one of the best guitarists and songwriters around today’ .

He took part in the Swarb tribute concert that we hosted in January 2018. His CD ‘All’s Well’ was actually recorded by Swarb in 2012 and tells the tale of Scott’s tragic journey to the North Pole in the winter of 1912  from which none of them returned. Folk London described it as ‘moving and beautifully composed ... a CD to treasure’. It was inspired by the journals, letters and biographies of the five men, and Jake tries to capture their thoughts and feelings as they realised that their deaths were inevitable. Jake wrote the music and lyrics of four of the five songs himself, singing them with enormous emotion and sensitivity, accompanying himself exquisitely on his guitar.
